The long-term implications of CRISPR

Updated: Apr 15, 2018

People is not able to understand the CRISPR-CAS system posibilities.

Very recently, to make genetic engineering, hard-to-obtain equipment and utensils were needed. It was necessary to know the sequence to be modified and its activation mechanisms. Generate DNA sequence, add a controllable promoter, insert it into a bacterial plasmid, reproduce the bacterium in large quantities, extract the new DNA, cut it with precision, insert it into an effective vector (virus or nanoparticle), infect a cell in culture and select the one that expresses the gene. Then you just have to clone and clone until you get an individual.

Now all you need is the sequence and the CRISP-CAS 9 system. Kits to make genetic modifications in your garage, are sold online for $ 120. Before the expression of your gene, was most times unstable or erroneous, now it is difficult to find errors after insertion. CRISP-CAS 9 is like the copy and paste of Windows 10, easy and safe. But the worst thing is that it is called CAS 9, because it is the only nuclease in the system whose functioning we know. There are another 9 CAS nucleases for research, which we do not know what they do...
